We’re featuring Jillane with the Big Beautiful Curly Hair! You’d definitely be inspired.
Tell me about yourself.
My name is Jillaine. I’m 18 years old, American, of Irish and Jamaican descent. I was born in the Bronx, New York and lived there until I was 10 years old. I then moved to Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, where I’ve lived since moving.
Describe your hair before going natural.
My hair has been natural my entire life! Of course from time to time I would straighten it, especially during my middle school years, but I’ve always rocked my natural hair.
Why did you go natural?
I’ve always been natural. Growing up I didn’t like my hair, but my mom wouldn’t let me relax it or anything really. She didn’t want to ruin my curls. I didn’t start loving my hair until like mid-10th grade (2011), but I’ve pretty much rocked the crazy curls since then.
Did you BC or transition?
As I said, I’ve always had my natural hair. I didn’t really know how to deal with it when I first started wearing it down, I used a bunch of products that really didn’t do my hair justice. At the end of my senior year (Summer of 2013), I pretty much cut off all of the dead/damaged hair and let it grow from there.
If you transitioned, how long before you BC’D?
I just cut off all of the damaged hair when I realized I cared about my hair and it’s health.
How long have you been natural for?
18 years now 😉
Tell me about your hair now; hair type, hair properties, hair likes or dislikes?
I would say that my curl texture is predominantly 3c. The curls are very fine. My hair has a mind of it’s own though, which I’m okay with most of the time. My hair loves humidity, which most curly girls don’t particularly love because the hair can get too frizzy, but the more frizz the better, in my opinion.
What’s your hair regimen like?
My hair regime is really simple actually; I’m a wash and go type of gal. I wash my hair every 2-4 days. After washing it, I separate my hair into two sections and then apply Kinky Curly Knot Today Leave In Conditioner/Detangler and One ‘N Only Aragan Oil. I have yet to really experiment with different hairstyles because for one, I’m lazy, and I’m also rally happy with the way my hair falls most of the time after washing so I find no need to play around with it; my hair is either down in it’s natural state or up in a bun/ponytail. I try to deep condition every two weeks, and when I do I use the Shea Moisture Raw Shea Butter Deep Treatment Masque, although I’m looking for new stuff to try out.
My wash day’s are pretty simple. I hop in the shower, soak my hair in the water and then lather my head with shampoo. The shampoo I use is DevaCurl No-Poo Shampoo, which I love. I let that sit for a few minutes, and then I was it out. I then separate my hair into two sections, and take two pumps of my DevaCurl One Condition Conditioner and start working on one side of my head. I use the Revlon Signature Paddle Brush to brush out each section of my head, starting from the bottom working my way up. Once I finish conditioning and brushing my hair out, I let the conditioner sit for a few minutes and then wash it out.
Holy-Grail products? Share!
Kinky Curly Knot Today! When I tell you this product worked wisdom on my hair, I mean it! I like my hair to get super big, super voluminous. This product allows that to happen to my hair, the mixture between that leave-in and the Florida humidity makes my hair as crazy as I want it to be!
How often do you wear your hair out?
I probably wear my hair down 5-6 days out of the week.
Have you been tempted to pick that relaxer at any point?
Honestly, no. I don’t like my hair straight. I feel as if my curls suit me, my body type, my personality. When my hair is straight I don’t feel like myself.
Have you received negative comments about your hair?
Absolutely! Mostly in middle school, which is probably why I disliked my hair so much then. I wore it in a bun almost everyday, unless I took the time to straighten my hair.
Any tips or tricks you want to share? We’re willing to learn!
The diffuser works wonders if you’re in a hurry but you still want your curls to look nice. Also, if you want more volume, take a pick and pull at the roots of your hair all over your head. When my hair is longer I love doing this because I don’t mind the shrinkage, I have enough hair to makeup for it.
